Compte rendu du contest VUSHF subrégional des 1er et 2 juillet 2023. Comme d’habitude, participation limitée, mais cette fois ce fût un mélange de “chasse” aux DX’s et d’appels. Propagation assez standard sur 144 MHz, avec toutefois une ouverture vers l’Espagne le dimanche matin. Ecoutez ci-dessous la force du signal reçu de EA1FCH/P, pourtant à près de 1200 km. Plus de QSO’s random et moins de prises de skeds sur KST que d’habitude. Sur 10 GHz, participation anecdotique, uniquement 5 QSO’s et moins de 200 km comme “ODX”.

Report of the sub-regional VUSHF contest held on 1 and 2 July 2023. As usual, my participation was limited, but this time it was a mix of DX “chasing” and calling. Propagation was fairly standard on 144 MHz, although there was an opening towards Spain on Sunday morning. Listen below to the strength of the signal received from EA1FCH/P, despite being nearly 1200 km away. More random QSO’s and fewer skeds taken on KST than usual. On 10 GHz, participation was anecdotal, with only 5 QSO’s and less than 200 km as “ODX”.

Compte rendu du contest VUSHF subrégional des 6 et 7 mai 2023. Comme d’habitude, participation limitée, surtout le dimanche, où je n’ai été actif que durant 3 heures en tout. Propagation très médiocre le samedi sur 144 MHz, signaux dans l’ensemble faibles. Sur 10 GHz, il y avait un peu de rain-scatter (RS) relativement local, pas de grands DX possibles donc. Essai infructueux avec DK0NA (JO50TI), que j’ai toutefois très bien entendu jusqu’à 579 (mais furtivement) en airplane-scatter (AS). Côté France, si les “Journées d’activité hyper” stimulent bien l’activité, les contests subrégionaux ne génèrent que peu, voire pas d’intérêt. C’est dommage. J’ai contacté F6DKW et F5HRY (merci à eux) comme seules stations françaises sur 10 GHz. Sur 144 MHz, avant de passer QRT pour la nuit le samedi soir, le meilleur DX était OM2Y à 990 km (en CW). J’ai entendu à plusieurs reprises EA2DR (IN83FD) à 1005 km mais mes appels sont restés sans réponse (?!). Sur 10 GHz, il n’y avait alors que 7 QSO’s dans le log. F5HRY en était le meilleur DX (242 km). Dimanche matin, tôt, avant de passer QRT jusque +/- 12h UTC en raison d’une compétition sportive, les stations OK étaient particulièrement fortes sur 144 MHz, si bien que OM3KII était contacté facilement en SSB (1006 km). Ecoutez l’enregistrement audio plus bas, en fin de publication. Vient ensuite dans le log OM5ZW en JN98AS (1032 km) contacté en CW. Reprise de l’activité à 12h30 UTC, il y a du rain-scatter sur 10 GHz… 9 QSO’s (certains en random, sans prise de sked) sont ajoutés au log, dont DK0NA (542 km), contacté en RS via un scatter point en JN39. Le contest prend fin avec un total de 16 QSO’s sur 10 GHz et 106 sur 144 MHz, en privilégiant la recherche des DX (mode S&P) plutôt que les sessions d’appels (mode Run). Sur 144, j’ai été appelé par EA4LU (IM68TV). Il s’agissait évidemment d’un burst météor-scatter (MS) mais la réflexion n’a pas duré assez longtemps que pour compléter le QSO. Plusieurs essais avec IO2V et IQ4KD (tous les deux en JN54) sont restés infructueux, ce qui est très rare !
Petite remarque sur la prise de skeds via ON4KST : certaines stations demandent des skeds “tous azimuths”, sans nécessairement tourner les antennes vers le correspondant sollicité… c’est évidemment une perte de temps !

Report of the sub-regional VUSHF contest of May 6 and 7, 2023. As usual, limited participation, especially on Sunday, where I was only active for 3 hours in total. Very poor propagation on Saturday on 144 MHz, overall weak signals. On 10 GHz there was some relatively local rain-scatter (RS), so no great DX possible. Unsuccessful attempt with DK0NA (JO50TI), which I heard very well up to 579 (but furtively) in airplane-scatter (AS). On the French side, if the “Journées d’activité hyper” stimulate the activity, the subregional contests generate little or no interest. This is a shame. I contacted F6DKW and F5HRY (thanks to them) as the only French stations on 10 GHz. On 144 MHz, before going QRT for the night on Saturday evening, the best DX was OM2Y at 990 km (in CW). I heard EA2DR (IN83FD) several times at 1005 km but my calls were not answered (?!). On 10 GHz, there were only 7 QSO’s in the log by then. F5HRY was the best DX (242 km). Early Sunday morning, before going QRT until +/- 12h00 UTC due to a sports competition, the OK stations were particularly strong on 144 MHz, so that OM3KII was easily contacted in SSB (1006 km). Listen to the audio recording below, at the end of the publication. Next in the log is OM5ZW in JN98AS (1032 km), contacted in CW. Activity resumes at 12h30 UTC, there is rain-scatter on 10 GHz… 9 QSO’s (some in random, without sked) are added to the log, including DK0NA (542 km), contacted in RS via a scatter point in JN39. The contest ends with a total of 16 QSO’s on 10 GHz and 106 on 144 MHz, with the emphasis on DX search (S&P mode) rather than calling sessions (Run mode). On 144, I was called by EA4LU (IM68TV). It was obviously a meteor-scatter (MS) burst but the reflection did not last long enough to complete the QSO. Several attempts with IO2V and IQ4KD (both in JN54) were unsuccessful, which is very rare!
A small remark on sked taking via ON4KST: some stations ask for “all azimuths” skeds, without necessarily turning the antennas towards the requested correspondent… it is obviously a waste of time!

Dimanche 2 janvier 2022, une ouverture inespérée s’est produite sur 144 MHz, un “duct” vers la Sicile (IT9) ! Il s’agissait bien de Tropo, IT9GSF (Fabio) était visible sur mon écran en FT8 durant environ 4h30 (13h24 > 17h52 UTC), avec un QSB lent. J’ai eu la chance de contacter Fabio dans l’après-midi, il est situé en JM67SS, soit à 1615 km de moi. Vu le niveau des signaux, un contact n’aurait pas été possible en SSB ni en CW, seul le FT8 le permettait. Plus tôt dans la journée, Frank, PA4EME avait aussi déjà spotté IT9GSF (merci Frank). On Sunday 2 January 2022, an unexpected opening occurred on 144 MHz, a “duct” to Sicily (IT9)! It was well Tropo, IT9GSF (Fabio) was visible on my screen in FT8 for around 4h30 (13h24 > 17h52 UTC), with a slow QSB. I was lucky enough to contact Fabio in the afternoon, he is located in JM67SS, 1615 km from me. Given the signal level, contact would not have been possible in SSB nor CW, only FT8 allowed it. Earlier in the day, Frank, PA4EME already spotted IT9GSF too (thanks Frank). Click on the WSJT-X screenshot to enlarge.

L’amélioration des conditions de propagation (“duct”) sur la Mer Méditerranée est clairement visible sur la carte de W. Hepburn. Encore fallait-il avoir la géométrie adéquate pour pouvoir entrer dans ce duct.

The improvement of the propagation conditions (“duct”) on the Mediterranean Sea is clearly visible on the map of W. Hepburn. However, it was necessary to have the right geometry to be able to enter this duct.

Compte rendu du contest MMC VHF des 6 et 7 novembre 2021 ; il s’agit du seul contest VHF dédié uniquement à la télégraphie (CW), et un de mes préférés !
Le samedi, jusque début de soirée, j’ai opéré la station OR6T (JO20KV), à 100 km  de la maison. Belle station de contest, très compétitive ! J’étais accompagné de Karel, ON4FI. De retour à la maison, j’ai opéré durant 2 heures, à la recherche des DX’s uniquement, pas de CQ’s. Déjà 4 QSO’s à plus de 800 km, dont OK1KTW (908 km) et IK4PMB (859 km). Après la nuit, retour aux affaires le dimanche dès 7h UTC. Et ce, jusqu’à la fin du contest, à l’exception d’une heure d’arrêt. Au total donc, 5 heures d’activité depuis OR6T et 8 heures depuis ma station personnelle. Dès la reprise le dimanche, OM2Y (990 km) et OM3KII (1005 km) sont dans le log ! Je suis fort sollicité sur “KST”, mais j’ai fait beaucoup de DX’s sans prise de sked, en total random, ce que je préfère. Essai avec 9A2AE (1051 km, JN86HF), j’entends Zvonko assez pour faire un QSO, mais lui ne m’entend malheureusement pas. La propagation me semble un peu au-dessus de la moyenne, tous azimuths. La bande est peu bruyante et les signaux sont relativement forts. Toujours en mode recherche des DX’s (mode S&P), les QSO’s s’enchainent. IQ5NN en JN63GN (1016 km) est dans le log, ce sera mon meilleur DX du contest. D’autres stations italiennes (6 en tout) seront contactées, plus de 20 stations OK aussi. Guy, F2CT (900 km), et quelques stations de la région de Toulouse seront aussi dans le log. J’étais majoritairement tourné vers l’est, direction dans laquelle il y a habituellement le plus d’activité. A part quelques CQ’s en fin de contest, 95% du trafic a été réalisé en S&P, ce qui explique le nombre limité de contacts, mais aussi une moyenne par QSO de près de 600 km. Contest très plaisant donc, je ne m’y suis pas ennuyé une seule seconde ! Le Top 10 DX QSO’s et la carte montrés ici ne concernent que le trafic réalisé depuis la maison.

Report of the VHF MMC contest of November 6 and 7, 2021; it is the only VHF contest dedicated only to telegraphy (CW), and one of my favorites !
On Saturday, until early evening, I operated the OR6T station (JO20KV), 100 km from home. Nice contest station, very competitive ! I was accompanied by Karel, ON4FI. Back at home, I operated for 2 hours, looking for DX’s only, no CQ’s. Already 4 QSO’s at more than 800 km, including OK1KTW (908 km) and IK4PMB (859 km). After the night, back to business on Sunday as from 7h UTC. And this until the end of the contest, with the exception of a one-hour break. In total, 5 hours of activity from OR6T and 8 hours from my personal station. As soon as I resumed on Sunday, OM2Y (990 km) and OM3KII (1005 km) were in the log ! I’m much requested on KST, but I did a lot of DX’s without sked, in total random, which I prefer. Trial with 9A2AE (1051 km, JN86HF), I can hear Zvonko enough to make a QSO, but unfortunately he can’t hear me. The propagation seems to be a little above average, all azimuths. The band is not very noisy and the signals are relatively strong. Still searching for DX’s (S&P mode), the QSO’s are following one after the other. IQ5NN in JN63GN (1016 km) is in the log, it will be my best DX of the contest. Other Italian stations (6 in all) will be contacted, more than 20 OK stations too. Guy, F2CT (900 km), and some stations in the Toulouse area will also be in the log. I was mostly heading East, the direction in which there is usually the most activity. Apart from a few CQ’s at the end of the contest, 95% of the traffic was in S&P, which explains the limited number of contacts, but also an average per QSO of almost 600 km. Very pleasant contest, I was not bored for a second ! The Top 10 DX QSO’s and the map shown here are only for the traffic made from home.
